Student Complaints and Grievances

Each student at CMI is encouraged to pursue academic studies and other college-sponsored activities that will promote growth and personal development. In pursuing these ends, the student should be free from unfair improper action by any member of the CMI community.

The college student grievance procedure is to be used in the event that a student feels he or she has been unfairly treated. The grievance action may be initiated by a student against another student, an instructor, an administrator, or any member of the College staff. Generally speaking, students should submit complaints about non-academic matters, in writing, to the Dean of Student Success. Non-academic matters could include: allegations of discrimination based on color, age, sex (to include sexual harassment and sexual/gender orientation), national origin, race, religion, political affiliation or disability condition; other forms of harassment; disruptive, threatening, or violent behavior; conduct associated with drugs and/or alcohol; and violations of other College policies. Complaints about academic matters should be made in writing to the Dean of Academic Affairs.

Complaints against other students will be handled according to the disciplinary procedures described in the Student Handbook. Complaints against College employees will be handled following the procedures in the Human Resources Policy and Procedure Manual. Students also have the right to make a complaint against the college to ACCJC via accjc.org/complaint-process/.

Per ACCJC’s Policy on Public and Student Complaints against Institutions, “While it cannot intervene in the internal procedures of institutions or act as a regulatory body, the Commission can and does respond to complaints regarding allegations of conditions at affiliated institutions that raise significant questions about the institution’s compliance with the Accreditation Standards expected of an accredited institution. The Commission does not consider allegations concerning the personal lives of individuals connected with its affiliated institutions. It assumes no responsibility for adjudicating isolated individual grievances between students, faculty, or members of the public and individual institutions. The Commission will not act as a court of appeal in matters of admission, granting or transfer of academic credit, grades, fees, student financial aid, student discipline, collective bargaining, faculty appointments, promotion, tenure and dismissals or similar matters.”
